What is RSS?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an online program that makes it easy for you to keep up on all the news and information that is of interest to you. With RSS you pick your topics and the Internet sources you want to draw from. The information is brought together by your personalized RSS reader – updated continually and always accessible. RSS is always free.

Content "feeds" can include news articles, excerpts from online forums – basically anything a Web site makes available for syndication. You can choose to browse headlines, read summaries, or click to read the original article in its entirety. An orange "RSS" button identifies syndicated material throughout the web.

How RSS works

  1. Set up your personalized RSS reader: Choose an RSS news aggregator, or "reader." There are dozens of free reader services, including My Yahoo, Google Reader, NewsGator, and Syndic8.
  2. Subscribe to receive content feeds: On any web site that offers RSS, choose your topics of interest. Simply look for one of these orange graphics indicating that the topic is available for subscription. Now copy and paste this link into your RSS reader as follows:
    • Mouse over the orange graphic RSS and right-click.
    • Choose one of the following, depending on your browser: "Copy Shortcut" (Internet Explorer), "Copy Link Location" (Netscape and Mozilla), or "Copy Link" (Safari).
    • Paste this link into your RSS reader.
